Victoria University (VU) can offer you a place as an international student in a course if you meet the minimum Academic requirements for entry into our courses, according to the qualifications in your country.

If you've completed a qualification where English was the primary language of instruction, you may be eligible for an exemption. Check the English language requirements.

English language requirements for certificates, diplomas & advanced diplomas

English language requirements are outlined on each certificate, diploma or advanced diploma course page. Please check the details carefully as some courses have specific English language requirements. As a guide, for the majority of courses you will need to provide evidence that you have achieved one of the following levels of English language proficiency:

  • IELTS (Academic module): Overall score of 5.5 (no band less than 5.0)
  • TOEFL Internet: Overall score of 55. Section scores no less than:
    • Listening: 9
    • Speaking: 16
    • Reading: 10
    • Writing: 18
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE): Overall score of 42-49 (no section score less than 40)
  • University of Cambridge - Advanced (CAE): Overall score of 162. No individual band less than 154. 
  • VU English - English for Academic Purposes (EAP) (Level 4): achieved.

IELTS, TOEFL, PTE and CAE: These tests must be taken no more than two years prior to commencing your course. 

In some cases, we will accept test results from other methods of examination not listed above.

Bachelor degrees

Academic entry requirements for bachelor degrees

Entry into undergraduate courses (for example a bachelor degree) generally requires you to have completed a secondary school qualification equivalent to an Australian Year 12 certificate.

English language requirements for bachelor degrees

You will need to provide evidence that you have achieved one of the following levels of English language proficiency:

  • IELTS (Academic module): Overall score of 6.0 (no band less than 6.0)
  • TOEFL Internet: Overall score of 67. Section score no less than:
    • Listening: 12
    • Speaking: 18
    • Reading: 15
    • Writing: 21
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE): Overall score of 50-57 (no section score less than 50)
  • University of Cambridge - Advanced (CAE): Overall score of 169. No individual band less than 169.
  • VU English - English for Academic Purposes (EAP) (Level 5): achieved.

Entry into a graduate certificate or graduate diploma generally requires you to have completed an undergraduate qualification that is comparable to an Australian bachelor degree.

Entry into a masters degree requires you to have completed an undergraduate qualification that is comparable to an Australian bachelor degree, honours degree or graduate diploma.

Research programs

Postgraduate academic entry requirements

Entry into a research program (postgraduate study) requires completion of:

  • an honours degree, or
  • a masters degree by coursework with a research component, or
  • an equivalent qualification from an approved university.

If you have a masters degree that did not include a research component, you may be eligible for our PhD (Integrated) program.

You will need to provide evidence have achieved the following levels of English language proficiency:

Additional or supplementary entry requirements

In some cases, courses will require additional requirements for entry to a VU course. You may need to provide information such as:

  • proof of work experience
  • a portfolio or folio of works
  • a police check or working with children check from your usual country of residence
  • a supplementary information form.

Exchange & study abroad students

To apply for the study abroad or exchange program, you need to have achieved an average of 65% or 2.5 grade point average (on a scale of 4 or equivalent) in your studies.
