We have a dedicated, full-time Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment and Community Liaison Officer who works with prospective and existing staff and managers to support their recruitment and development at the University. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment and Community Liaison Officer provides assistance with:

  • job applications

  • interviewing processes

  • induction

  • ongoing wellbeing.

We also have an Indigenous leave policy that provides for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to take leave to meet family, ceremonial and cultural obligations, and stay connected to their community.

The University’s Yannoneit Employment Strategy (YES) encourages the recruitment, retention and development of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff and promotes a culturally safe environment.

Yannoneit Employment Strategy (YES) aims

YES aims is to build on and support the goals of Bathelmun Yalingwa the university-wide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Strategy.

The YES aims to:

  • increase the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees at VU to achieve a target of 3% of the workforce
  • increase the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander academic staff at VU. This includes growing the academic workforce by increasing the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students enrolled in Higher Degrees by Research
  • increase the number of cultural awareness sessions to a minimum of four per year with a focus on managers to assist in attaining employment targets and staff retention
  • provide for the professional development of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across all positions at VU to enable the career advancement of academic and professional staff
  • provide tailored, culturally sensitive induction processes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff
  • establish and promote VU as a supportive, culturally sensitive and significant employer of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
